Glossary
Definitions for
specific terms.
- API (Application Programming Interface)
- The
contains all the functions required to activate vibration force feedback
within an application. Functions within the
access IVT data exported from
and send the data to hardware that contains Immersion's
Technology.
- Attack
- Parameter in the Envelope that modifies the beginning
of a Basis Effect.
- Attack Level
- The Attack Level specifies the start Magnitude
for an effect. Over the duration specified in Attack Time, the magnitude will
increase or decrease until the Magnitude is equal to the Magnitude specified
in the effect's Magnitude parameter.
- Attack Time
- The Attack Time specifies the amount of time in
which the Attack Level will modify the effect.
- Basis Effect
- A base effect that can be played alone or in combination
with other basis effects. Periodic and MagSweep are types of basis effects.
- Device Connect Files
- DLL files that facilitate communication between applications running on Microsoft® Windows and
devices attached to the computer. These files enable developers to feel effects on the target hardware while
using or while debugging their own applications.
- Envelope
- A group of parameters that modify the beginning and end of an effect. Within a Basis effect, the beginning and end of the
effect can be shaped with Envelope parameters. Parameters that modify the start of an effect are called Attack parameters while those that modify the
end of an effect are called Fade parameters.
- Fade
- Parameter in the Envelope that modifies the end
of a Basis Effect.
- Fade Level
- The Fade Level specifies the magnitude level at
the end of an effect. Over the duration specified in Fade Time, the Magnitude
will increase or decrease from the value in the effect's Magnitude parameter
to the value specified by Fade Level.
- Fade Time
- The Fade Time specifies the amount of time at the
end of an effect in which the Fade Level will modify the effect.
- IFR File
- Immersion Force Resource file created in Immersion
Studio [for Gaming], a tool that predates
. IFR files contain several types of effects used on Joysticks, Wheels, and mice.
Some effects are not compatible with .
- IVS File
- The file format used by
to store project information. An IVS file can contain information about Basis
Effects, Timeline Effects or Multimedia objects. Only
can read and write IVS files.
- IVT data
- Binary format used by the Immersion
. IVT data contains effect data used to create complex force feedback effects
on the target hardware. IVT files are created by exporting data from
. IVT data can be accessed using function in the
.
- K3G Files
- K3G files are derived from MPEG-4 files. They basically have the same features as MP4 files.
- Launch Event
- Launch Events contain a start time and Basis effect override parameters. Launch Events are created from Basis effects.
Contained in a Timeline, Launch Events determine which Basis effect is played at a particular time. If an override parameter is not defined, the parameter
value from the Basis effect is used.
- Leading Silence
- The start time of the first note in a MIDI file.
- Legitimate Seek Time
- Any point in time where audio playback can begin. For MIDI files, every second on or after the
Minimum Seek Time is a Legitimate Seek Time. For example, if the Minimum Seek Time is 2000 ms, then the first Legitimate
Seek Time is 2000 ms. The next Legitimate Seek Times are 3000, 4000. etc.
- MagSweep
- A basis effect that contains parameters for turning
on an actuator at chosen magnitude and duration.
- Minimum Seek Time
- The Leading Silence rounded up to the second.
- MP4 Files
- MP4 is the file format for the MPEG-4 standard and can contain audio and/or video, as well as effects.
- Multimedia
- An object in
that contains a link to a Wave, MIDI or SKM file. Multimedia objects can be saved
in IVS files, but are not saved in IVT data.
- Padding Effect
- An end marker effect can be placed at the end of a Timeline effect, if the Timeline effect is shorter in duration than the
MIDI file in order for the Timeline effect and the MIDI file to have the same duration. The end marker effect has a magnitude of 0, therefore it is not
felt by the user.
- Periodic
- A basis effect that contains parameters for turning
an actuator on and off at chosen magnitude, frequency and duration.
- Repeat Event
- Contained in a Timeline, a Repeat Event consists of a range of time and a repeat count. A Repeat Event delineates a
range of time containing Launch Events. Launch Events that fall within the range of a Repeat Event are repeated in sequence a specified number of times.
- Requested Seek Time
- The time at which the user tells to start playback. If Skip Leading Silence is checked, this is the sum of the Leading
Silence plus the Start Offset parameter. If Skip Leading Silence is not checked, this value is equal to the Start Offset parameter.
- SKM File
- SKM files are SK Telecom video files that are optimized for streaming and may contain data.
- Timeline Effect
- A complex effect made from one or more basis effects.
Timeline effects contain Launch Events and Repeat Events.
-
Device
- Hardware that contains Immersion's
Technology.
-
- A software package that includes , the
and Device Connect files for Microsoft Windows enabling developers to play effects on handsets attached to a
computer.
-
- The Immersion is made up of the and the .
This combination of software and hardware enables design and playback of simple and complex vibration force feedback.
-
- A tool used to create, display and edit haptic effects. Effects can be designed and felt within
.
- Waveform
- A basis effect that defines the actuator drive signal from the contents of a WAV file.
